Isla believes that everything happens for a reason, especially the hard stuff.
Living with Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM), a rare autoimmune condition where her immune system attacks her own muscles, she faces daily challenges with grace and wisdom.
JDM causes muscle weakness and extreme pain in her legs, meaning physical activities require careful pacing and frequent breaks. But Isla has perspective: "Sure, you have to take meds and get shots. It's not easy. But it makes you braver, and in the end, you feel stronger for getting through it."
Her journey has given her something invaluable: deep compassion for other kids facing their own battles. She believes some of life's hardest moments happen "to make you a better person."
"It's much easier for me to understand what other kids with diseases are going through," she explains.
Isla doesn't just endure her challenges. She transforms them into strength and an unshakeable belief that difficult experiences can make us better people.
Since 2021, Chai Lifeline has been there for Isla and her family every step of the way, providing case management and support, as well as participation in specialized programming like Camp Simcha, the Big Sister program, respite events, food deliveries, and so much more. Surrounded by friends who truly understand, she's found her place to shine.
