Meet Ruchama

Ruchama, a 14-year-old from Baltimore, MD, has bravely faced a heart condition since birth, undergoing four open-heart surgeries as an infant and grappling with a lung condition. For years, Chai Lifeline Mid-Atlantic has offered Ruchama and her family  invaluable support and programming, including pairing Ruchama with a 'big sister.'

Ruchama has spent three consecutive summers at Camp Simcha, Chai Lifeline’s medically supervised overnight camp, where she formed a steadfast connection with her counselor—who, remarkably, they discovered, is also a relative.

When asked how she navigates life's challenges, Ruchama said, "Reflecting on my journey, I'm reminded of the famous Harry Potter quote, 'Happiness can be found in the darkest of times if only one remembers to turn on the light.' Chai Lifeline and Camp Simcha illuminate that light for me, offering cherished memories throughout the year."
