Last year, I was very happy to support Camp Simcha by raising funds and riding 150 miles from Jersey Shore to Camp Simcha in Bike4Chai. I still get chills when I think of the reception we received when we entered the camp. There was singing and dancing and celebrating. The kids were as excited to see us as we were to finish the ride! It was an amazing experience.
This year, however,my experience with Bike4Chai will be much more personal. That’s because a few months ago, my nephew was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. Yehudah was just a normal 17-year-old boy who one day woke up with a pain in his knee. The cancer diagnosis has completely changed his life and the life of our family.
Yehudah’s parents live in Michigan but they wanted their son to get treated at Manhattan’s renowned Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. To make this possible, Yehudah and his mother were warmly welcomed into our home in Brooklyn, where they are now staying for the duration of his treatment.
The doctors at MS-K believe that his condition may be stabilized by this summer. If so, the family is hoping that Yehudah will be one of the campers welcoming the cyclists of Bike4Chai into Camp Simcha this August. B’ezras Hashem!
Six years ago, I would never have thought to participate in a two-day, 150-mile bike ride through New Jersey and New York State. Going the distance is something the children of Camp Simcha know a lot about, having had to face great challenges in their young lives. And to give these children the chance to experience two weeks of joy is what motivates the riders of Bike4Chai, as they too go the distance.
I hope I can offer some inspiration for others to get involved, by helping to support this extraordinary camp. And I wish everyone could see the happiness I saw on the faces of these little angels when we rode into Camp Simcha!”
(To learn more about Camp Simcha and Camp Simcha special, visit www.campsimcha.org.) I will be biking to camp on Wednesday and Thursday Aug. 8th & 9th. My objective is to raise $20,000.00 by then and I hope you will help me reach this goal. All donations are 100% tax-deductible.
Please contribute by clicking on the donate button now.
Thank you for supporting me, and in doing so, helping children and their families cope with the diagnosis, treatment, and aftermath of serious pediatric illness.
Best regards, Brenton
